Summary

This is a 3D printed joke especially for "rocket scientists".

To a linguist, a conjunction is a connecting word like "and", "but", "yet", and so on. To someone who works with satellites, a conjunction is an event in which two things in orbit collide - something to be avoided if one of those things is your spacecraft! This model is therefore a conjunction of conjunctions. But fear not! You can prevent the conjunction if you let one word pass before the other.

Post-Printing

Assembly

            <div><p>To assemble this model, you will need:</p><ul><li>one print of each of the three parts</li><li>two pieces of straightened filament</li><li>glue</li></ul><p>The parts have holes in the to allow the filament to pass through. Print the parts in the appropriate size for your filament. Then simply thread the words on the lengths of filament, insert them through the holes in the frame, and glue the ends in place.</p><p>If you are using 1.75mm filament, you may be able to straighten it sufficiently by hand. I made this with 2.85mm filament, which I straightened with a heat gun. PLA starts to deform at about 60 C, so if you don't have a heat gun handy, any other low heat source should work, such as a heated print bed or probably even a hair dryer. Avoid using open flames - they would cause scorching and bad fumes.</p></div>

How I Designed This

This was designed completely in OpenSCAD.

If you want to re-render this design, you'll need to download the Alfa Slab One font, which Google has made available under the Open Font License 1.1. (On the font's homepage, select the font, then click the download icon in the bottom right.) Extract AlfaSlabOne-Regular.ttf from the zip file and place it in the same directory as conjunction_conjunction.scad.

There are three variables at the top of the file you may wish to adjust:

part determines which part of the model will be rendered.
hole_d is the true diameter of your filament.
hole_delta is additional clearance added to let the words move freely.
