FASA Romulan V-11 Stormbird: Star Trek starship parts kit expansion #25

Update 2026-01-03: with the recent release of the updated D7/K’t’inga kit, I’ve made a pass updating the V-11 to use the updated parts and implement the same mesh improvement that are on the parent kit. It should now be better suited for both miniature and larger scale (1/1000+) prints.

This is the 25th expansion parts kit meant to complement my original Star Trek Constitution Class Parts Kit. A smaller release than most I publish, this kit adds parts to support the V-11 Stormbird, a Romulan version of the Klingon D-7. The V-11 is from the old FASA Star Trek role playing and combat board game, and the FASA-specific version of the design originates from the Romulan Ship Recognition Manual released back in 1985.

All parts in this kit are meant to be cross-compatible with other parts kits I’ve published.

See my profile for the full list of parts kits I’ve released so far. Each of these kits includes combined ships and ship parts STL files, along with blender source files used to create them. Ship files should be ready to print. Part files are provided so you can import into your 3d modelling software of choice to combine and modify to easily create your own ship designs. All parts are meant to be cross-compatible between kits.

Included Ships

This kit includes three variants of the V-11, based on FASA lore:

Type 1

The Type 1 is comprised of the original batch of old Klingon D-7A’s, which were essentially unmodified aside from swapping out the Klingon weapons with Romulan ones. This is the version seen in Star Trek: The Original Series. It’s visually identical to the Klingon version.

Type 2

The Type 2 series were D-7 hulls transferred from Klingons to Romulans in a mostly stripped-down state. The Romulans outfitted these with indigenously produced warp drives and upgraded shields. Aside from the nacelles (which are very similar to those found on the Romulan V-9), there are a few other minor hull details.

Type 5

The final series of hulls transferred as part of the short-lived Klingon-Romulan tech exchange, the Type 5s were more extensively upgraded along the lines of the Klingon D-7M (K’t’inga). These appear very similar to the K’t’inga, but with V-9 style nacelles and completely new hull detailing.

Note these models are based on (and very similar to) the Klingon D-7 / K’t’inga I released as part of my original FASA Klingon Ships kit.

Zip Files

Zip files are included in the following google drive locations:

• v11-v2-ship-stls.zip – Contains the combined, ready to print, ship files.
• v11-v2-parts-stls.zip – Contains all of the individual part STL files used to create the combined ship files.
• v11-v2-blender-files.zip – Contains the source blender files used to generate the parts, as well as files with the parts assembled as used to generate the combined ship files.

Notes on scaling and working with Blender

My target scale for all source files and output STL files is 1:1000, However, I generally recommend 1:2500 or smaller given the detail level of the model. Although these files have not been extensively tested through printing, they are intended to be resized to match common modelling and miniatures scales.

Blender

Blender is free, which to be honest was the primary factor in my decision to learn it. There are many fine video and text tutorials available online if you're interested in learning more. For a basic tutorial on moving and joining objects in Blender(which should be the minimum you need to know when working with these parts), see this instructables tutorial.

You can use File -> Import -> Stl (.stl) and File -> Export -> Stl (.stl) to load or save STL files in blender.

Note: This kit was built using Blender 3.1.

Post-processing STL output

Although all of the STL files included have been tested as valid watertight meshes, joining the parts together and exporting new STL files can introduce small errors that may cause issues with slicing programs. I recommend any STL files you create are checked using a program like Netfabb Basic free edition. Doing a simple "Close All Holes" repair has fixed most of the issues I've run into so far. If you do run into issues with mesh quality, please let me know.

Parts

The v11-v2-parts-stls.zip file contains all of the part STL model files listed below. Note that part files are not meant to be printed on their own, but instead they are meant to be combined to create new ship designs that can then be output as joined files and printed.

Combined ship STLs

The v11-v2-ship-stls.zip file provides the printable ships created using the parts included in this kit.

Blender files

The v11-v2-blender-files.zip file contains parts files, containing the STL parts arranged as used in the sample ship designs, and parts source files, containing the raw blender objects used to create the parts.
