Overview and Background

Using one of the many aqueduct prints found on Thingiverse, have students hypothesize what the structure was used for. Next, discuss methods of moving freshwater from a source to different locations in a city. With 3D printing, allow students to design and print their own aqueducts that can move water from one location to another.

Lesson Plan and Activity

Day 1: Introduction and Hypothesis

Begin by discussing the concept of aqueducts. Ask students if they have ever heard of or seen aqueducts, and what they think they were used for. Write down their initial thoughts on the board.

Show students images of Roman aqueducts and introduce the historical context. Explain that aqueducts were used to transport water in ancient Rome.

Share a 3D printed model of a Roman aqueduct, if available, or show images of similar models from Thingiverse. Explain that they will be creating their own mini-aqueducts.

Assign students to research Roman aqueducts and their historical purpose for homework. In the next class, they will share their findings.

Day 2: Discussion and Design

Have students share their research on Roman aqueducts. Discuss the historical importance and engineering principles behind these structures.

Introduce the design challenge: Students will design and 3D print their own aqueducts to move water from one container to another.

Day 3: Design and Testing
