Simple Parametric Allen Hex Key Holder, with text!
Extension of the excellent parametric allen key holder by fumbucker.
I parameterised a few more options and added comments. And most importantly, added labels to the key holder slots. Now you can find your 7/64" amongst your 1/8" and 3/32", or your 2.5mm amongst your 2mm and 3mm.
For those just looking for a holder for their 25 Piece Hex Key Set, I've included a model for every combination of imperial / metric, smooth / bumpy, debossed / embossed, and vertical / sideways text options. So you can just download, take your pick and be on your way.
For those who want to customise, the introduction of text brings some important caveats:
- Render time in OpenSCAD has gone up significantly. Either disable the labels or the cut (seriously) while iterating to save a heap of time.
- I picked a font and sizing that worked nicely for me. The model doesn't come with fonts, so you may need to find something that works for you.
- The label size without the
smooth_bodyoption set is right on the border of legibility, so success will depend on your printer, filament and eyeball tolerance.- If you're unsatisfied, you can try another font. Or try shorter labels and the new
labels_verticaloption, to squeeze in some larger characters.
- If you're unsatisfied, you can try another font. Or try shorter labels and the new
- Alas, Customizer chokes hard on the text. Not only could I not get an array of strings to work (so you can't customise the labels), the labels don't appear in the preview anyway. Besides, the cut renders in the opposite direction to OpenSCAD. So unfortunately, for now you need OpenSCAD for full functionality.
Other than that, this is working a treat for me. I was able to produce a variety of metric and imperial holders, and easily tweak the text to suit various options.
