Posable Raven

Realistic bird prop that opens wings when a string is pulled, utilizing a custom umbrella opening mechanism and pulley system (Winner of 2024 UCLA Engineering Makerspace Costume Contest)
Made of 20 unique parts designed SOLIDWORKS and Blender (over 30 hours of 3D printing)
Made in 13 days from initial project idea to finished product (over 16 hours of assembly)

Additional Materials Included:

  • 3mm aluminum wire
  • 3mm screws and bolts
  • super glue
  • hot glue
  • black T-shirt
  • poly-fill stuffing
  • laser cut half inch circles with hot glue added on top for eyes
  • black string for eyes and pulley mechanism

Problems never to be fixed:

  • wire breaks after many uses
  • material T-shirt piece dimensions are undocumented
  • feather placement is undocumented (I made an approximate paper template by hand)
  • laser cut wings prone to breakage
