Volvo 740 - 760 - 940 - 960 rear seat ashtray USB mount
The rear ashtray on Volvo 940 is bit of lost estate. It's too small to be an useful trash bin, and in my car, anyone needing a smoke right there and then are welcome to do so at the bus stop of nearest convenience. I converted mine to more useful item, a quadruple USB charger output.
The charger module is XFW-KC42-4 24W 4 Channel Quick Mobile Charger Module, which is readily available through various channels. The mounting is done with M3 machine screws threaded directly on the plastic; this seems to work fine. For the bottom, M3x4 are suitable, while near the ports slightly longer screws are recommended, M3x6 or M3x8. The screws at the ports are a bit tricky, a good ball nosed Allen drive is needed. There is a lip against which the board rests against, relieving the stresses put on the screw towers. Use heat resistant material for the print, car interiors get quite toasty in the summer.
The tray is dismantled by pulling open the sheet metal tabs that keep the plastic wings in place, with a bit of wiggling, the plastic bit can be splayed so the metal insert may be removed. The snuffer bar is held with similar tabs, remove the bar from the tray and drill a hole to the metal wall. Mark the position of of the hole in the ashtray recess in the center armrest pillar and drill a larger hole that easily passes a connector of your choosing, and also doesnt chafe on the wire with the ashtray in either open or closed position. Use a cable tie in the charger board wire as strain relief. Connect to a fused power line, 10A should be good.
