1983 Yamaha XJ900 Seca Anti Dive Seal Removal Tool
If you have ever tried to disassemble and reassemble the anti-dive units on the 1983 (and other years with the same setup) Yamaha XJ-900 Seca, you know it's a lesson in frustration. There is a little wire clip that has to be removed at the same time you compress a fairly stiff spring. The tight quarters make it seem nearly impossible.
That's where this tool comes in. In combination with an M6-45mm (or longer) bolt and a 12-12.5mm OD washer, you can use this tool to compress the spring while you remove or insert the wire clip. Easy peasy.
When I first pulled mine apart, I destroyed the wire clips trying to get them out. They are surprisingly expensive to replace too. When it came time to insert the new ones, I tried using a vice and sockets, but it was too hard to get the wire clip in place and I started to damage those as well. Then it occurred to me that there is an M6 threaded hole in the bottom of the housing for the adjustment screw, and with the right size ring, I could just screw in a bolt to compress the spring.
To be honest, this tool is optional. If you can find a washer of the correct size, you could do without it. But it does make it much easier to line everything up and avoid damage to the seal. Conversely the washer is optional too if you have this tool and can't find the right size. The washer just makes the screw turn smoother and adds a little strength. If you just use a washer without this tool, the size is fairly critical. Less than 12mm and it may not get enough overlap on the seal and could cause damage. Larger than 12.5mm and it may interfere with getting the wire clip in place.
PLA is fine to print in. Use a higher wall count so it prints solid. 4 is probably enough. I printed at .28mm layer height, but it doesn't really matter much.
Good luck!
