Object 279 Nuclear Tank
At the end of the Korean War, the United States and Soviet Union had been eying one another up for a nuclear duel. With both sides possessing the ability to bomb one another into oblivion with new weapons such as the atomic cannon, the Soviet Union needed a tank that could survive the hellish landscape of such a war. IN true soviet fashion, the Soviets took inspiration from their Heavy tanks, such as the Object 277 and IS7, and worked to try to create a tank with cunning edge features that could be easily produced and maintained for years. What they produced, however, would be one of the weirdest yet iconic tanks: Object 279. Object 279 was a tank made for the nuclear wasteland. With four tracks and a spherical saucer shape, it was made to survive the shockwave of a nuclear blast. With over 319 mm of armour in the front and 182mm all around, its armour was tough to crack with its spherical shape. It also included spaced plates between the armour to help deal with shaped charges. Its four tracks prevented this beast from sinking into the mud. However, its transmission was complicated to maintain, and the fuel was stored in the beams to which these tracks were attached. Its turret had a semi-automatic loader for the 130mm gun, allowing it to get 6-7 rounds off per minute. At the same time, the turret ring position, like on many other soviet heavies, limited its depression. It ultimately wasn't pursued since it was too unwieldy with its four tracks, sunk in the mud often, and cramped for its crew. With Kruscvhev limiting soviet tank tonnage to 37 tons, this project was unplugged in 1960. Only three working prototypes were built, and a working one remains today.
But what if this was pursued or pushed out?
As the Soviets prepared for their march into Western Europe, they equipped the 1287th tank special brigade with these mechanical marvels for the northern spearhead into Germany. Made to withstand nuclear bombardment, they will move ahead while Soviet bombers clear the way with Nukes. Soon, Europe will tremble at the might of these Soviet beasts. You can field these in Flames of War and Team Yankee.
This is a rough cut. I will clean these up in a blender and make them better.
