Coronado Solar Scope Pentaprism Support Cradle
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a custom 3D-printed part I designed to address a common issue with the Coronado PST: the internal pentaprism shifting or being misaligned, which can cause serious focus problems.
As many of you know, the stock adhesive and prism seating aren’t always secure, and once the prism tilts even slightly, light paths can reflect incorrectly — making sharp solar views impossible.
To solve this, I designed a mechanical support cage that fits inside the prism chamber and holds the prism firmly in place with zero movement in any direction. It uses the walls of the housing for stability and does not require any permanent modification to the telescope. The frame is lightweight with an open truss design and supports the prism from beneath, ensuring it remains correctly aligned with the optical axis.
The fit is tight, but not forced. It eliminates the need for glue, foam, or Velcro, and can be printed in PETG or ASA for temperature resistance.
I’m happy to share the STL or STEP files if anyone else is interested in trying this fix. Let me know — I’d love to contribute to keeping these scopes running reliably!
Clear skies,
