Ice Fishing Auto Hook Setter for PVC - Y adapter and longer trigger
This provides some upgrade parts for a PVC-based ice fishing auto hook setter. This uses the trigger parts for 7/8 inch OD PVC tubing and the rod holding tube. This allows for the front support legs to be angled forward for greater stability, where the legs are angled forward at 45 degrees. The bracket that supports the rod holder can also be slid forward or backward to allow different rod lengths. This also allows for rod angles of 15, 30 and 45 degrees. Feet are provided for the end of the PVC tube sections. This also provides for a longer trigger that is also slightly angled upwards.
See https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5198586 for the trigger and rod tube holder parts that are also designed for use with PVC tubing. This was a variation from another design that used 25x25mm metal rods instead of PVC tubing.
The parts should be attached using 10-24 screws of 1.5, 2 and 5/8 inch lengths. Use nylon nuts and/or wing nuts as appropriate. The legs and feet can also use glue for attachment to the Y adapter. You can choose to use screws to fix the Y adapter and backend bracket to the main PVC tube. The backend bracket does not need to be fixed to a position on the main PVC tube. The backend bracket is a redesign of the original bracket, where it allows it to be slid along the PVC tube to obtain the proper positioning for the fishing rod.
Typically a 5 foot piece of PVC tubing should be cut into 26, 17 and 17 inch lengths. 24, 18 and 18 would be good lengths as well. Use a 3/16 inch drill bit to drill holes in the PVC tubing as needed for the 10-24 screws, or alternatively use glue or machine screws to attach parts to the PVC tubing.
Thanks to Brett Homich for his ideas and testing efforts!
Note: I simply use a bent paper clip to attach the rod eyelet to the trigger mechanism.
Another note: BE CAREFUL NOT TO POKE YOUR EYE OUT!
