Simple LaGG-3 (FDM available soon)
Adapted from the La-5 model at Printables.com
The Lavochkin-Gorbunov-Gudkov LaGG-3 was a Soviet/Russian fighter of the Second World War. Despite being built from resin-impregnated plywood to conserve metal, the LaGG-3 was overweight and underpowered. However, the plywood was surprisingly incombustible and completely immune to decay. While it didn't catch fire from HE ammo, though, the wooden structure frequently splintered when hit by gunfire. Pilots disliked the type, with some calling it a "varnished guaranteed coffin." One pilot even claimed that his unit had a better kill ratio with the I-16 than the LaGG-3.
The first major production variant was the LaGG-3-4, armed with two 7.62mm ShKAS machine guns, one 12.7mm Berezin gun, and a coaxial 20mm ShVAK engine gun. All subsequent LaGG-3 variants had only the Berezin and the ShVAK. The pre-production LaGG-3-1 carried an additional Berezin on top of the LaGG-3-4's armament. A retractable tailwheel was introduced with the LaGG-3-35. The LaGG-3-34 carried a 37mm Nudelmann gun in place of the 20mm ShVAK. Some LaGG-3-8s received a 23mm VYa-23 gun in place of the ShVAK, depending on availability.
Update: Revised LaGG-3-8 model, added LaGG-3-11 and LaGG-3-23.
