Knightia eocaena is an extinct pellonline, which are often known by the name "sprats" or "gizzard shads". They lived across Wyoming, Colorado and Utah in three paleolakes; Fossil Lake, Lake Uinta, and Lake Gosiute.

Fossil Lake was the most productive for fossilization and produced most of the Knightia eocaena fossils found today. It was also the home of the muse of this model, Nelson. Lake Uinta was eutrophic, that is, it was extremely nutrient rich and had lots of microbes and little oxygen. Lake Uinta produced the largest deposit of oil on earth, that is as of yet, untapped. Lake Gosiute does not have a lot of Knightia fossils, potentially because the areas where they lived weren’t preserved as well.

This model is a life reconstruction of an individual named Nelson, and is life sized. The background of the thumbnail is a eutrophic retention pond in Florida, probably a former phosphate mine. The plant, Salix nigra is related to, and a very likely descendant of, the Salix species that surrounded the lake systems of the Green River Formation.
