Ryobi DS 1000 Sander - Airbrush Hobby Paint Shaker Adapter

I was looking for a reliable and inexpensive way to shake/mix my airbrush paints, and everything I found was either very low quality junk or too expensive for my taste. All these shakers either use a circular vortex motion or a linear/circular back and forth motion.

I thought about it for a bit, and It's amazing what happens when you put your mind to work on an idea. Then it came to me. Maybe I could convert a spare orbital sander I have by making an adapter to hold the paint bottle. I was thinking about a Makita sander I have that has a 4"X4" pad for attaching squares of sandpaper. I began searching for a pre-existing design, and found that back in January 29, 2013 "frubino" made this replacement head for his Ryobi oscillating detail sander after he dropped his and it and it broke the paper holter. I was instantly excited because I have a spare one of these Ryobi sanders. I had one, and then recently found another at a yard sale, so I picked it up as a spare, just in case.

Frubino's design served as an almost perfect base from which to work. I remixed it in TinkerCAD by modifying it. I removed the top and adding a bottle holder to it to come up with this. I was actually surprised at how nicely it works. I had to fiddle with it a bit, as the stock adapter would bottom against the sander housing, thereby limiting movement, but once I reworked that and got it set up properly, it worked great.

Add M3 washers on both sides of the part when you attach it with the original allen bolt,and you're good to go. (I only showed one in the pics under the bolt head, but put the other washer on the othe side of the adapter, between it and the rectangular tool shaft. This fastener needs to be tight, in fact if mine loosens up again I'll be adding some blue Loctite to the threads. If the head loosens you will notice a lot less shakin' goin' on, as Elvis might say! LOL!

Throw a couple of small stainless steel ball bearings in the paint bottle for good measure and then place it on the adapter. Hold it there while wrapping some rubber bands across the jar, as you see in the pics and and let 'er rip. I added multiple pegs for the rubber bands to accomodate different size bottles/jars.

I thought about making a stand for the sander, but its really not necessary, and it's just one more piece to keep track of.
